Sierra Leone 63rd Independence Day - How would you evaluate the progress Sierra Leone has made since gaining independence?

On April 27, 1961, Sierra Leone successfully attained independence, culminating a span of more than 150 years under British colonial dominion and emerging as the newest sovereign nation in West Africa.

The inception of this new nation was marked by the ceremonial revelation of its flag in green, white, and blue precisely at midnight, accompanied by the assumption of the Prime Ministerial role by Sir Milton Margai.

The transition to independence in Sierra Leone initially transpired peacefully. However, in 1967, the All People's Congress (APC) ascended to power with Siaka Stevens at its helm, subsequently assuming the presidency in 1971.

By 1978, the APC had become the exclusive legal political entity. In 1985, Major General Joseph Momoh ascended to the presidency unopposed. Regrettably, his tenure was marred by corruption, leading to his ousting in a coup led by Captain Valentine Strasser in 1992.

In reflecting on the evolution post-independence, Sierra Leone has navigated a turbulent political landscape, oscillating between democratic governance, periods of single-party dominance, and military takeovers.

The nation has grappled with formidable obstacles such as corruption, political instability, and social upheaval, factors that have delineated its course since achieving independence.
